The Bonsai boi

about

I wish to sell my bonsai trees and bonsai tree accessories. I also plan to provide information and concepts related to bonsai tree cultivation and the lifestyles associated with engagement in such art. Information on Japanese culture and the principles that guide it as well.

I am The Bonsai Boi. That's what people call me anyway. I have always loved to garden and the ever-present creative needs that stir within me decided to get together and throw a little party. That party has been happening for over a decade now! I started growing and caring for Bonsai Trees over 10 years ago and have made it my personal mission to perfect the art of caring for and developing living art. That's right bonsai trees are real live art.

I once heard someone say you can't have a "hobby business". A venture is either a hobby indulgence or a business plan. Hobbies ebb and flow and pass time enjoyably. Businesses are formed to earn money with direct focused efforts in surpassing competition in their market. Further, if a business costs money, it will not persist. So, I set out to never work a day if I was doing what I loved and all efforts were painlessly passion fueled.

So how would I set myself apart from any of the other thousands of individuals and businesses growing and providing bonsai trees for sale? Simple. What is the number one hurdle in caring for a bonsai tree successfully? Keeping it alive. You hear more about the bonsai trees folks used to have than the ones they still enjoy. I need to set people for success. I need to remove any guesswork in caring for bonsai of any type, style, age, or location. Ensuring successful bonsai trees will in turn ensure my success. It just clicked for me on that concept alone. So, I set out to make caring for the miniature trees I sell as bulletproof as the "success ensures success" ideal.

From that jumping point I spoke to, called upon, listened to, read about, watched, joined in, and hung out in as much bonsai culture as I could. It became evident, with a relative quickness, that there was one clear contributor to failed bonsai and not surprisingly was the most discussed topic in all forums bonsai related. That topic was as I call it comprehensively "the watering process". I do not have real science driven numbers to go from here, but I believe it stands to reason that about 90% of failed and dead bonsai efforts are due to watering. Often too little water is offered to the bonsai and most bonsai being evergreen the owner does not realize they are offering too little of (literally) life's source until they have a crispy dead although still green bonsai tree. Most bonsai die a slow death much that of a Christmas tree if you think about it in those terms. Christmas trees come home dead but green. So, what do we do to keep them looking their best for as long as possible? We administer water so that it will cling to the life and vitality it once had. Just don't let that tree dry out once in its stand because the end will only be days away instead of weeks if we do allow the reservoir to dry out. I mean if trees need water once cut and dead, they must certainly need it when living right?

There is so much misinformation out there about watering bonsai and different watering needs of different types of bonsai, but one thing is clear. Not enough water is a leading cause of bonsai burials. The 2nd contributor is too much water which leads to swampy conditions that then allows mold, fungus, and root rot. So, the dichotomy of encouraging folks to avidly water their bonsai with the worry of over encouraging them to kill their beloved bonsai by also not under watering them. Lots of gray area there. How to handle this?

So here comes my claim to fame. What I am about to tell you is what gave The Bonsai Boi his name. But first I must digress. The aspect of watering bonsai is responsible for so much guesswork due to what they require because of their minimal pots and planters. It is easy for a healthy bonsai to deplete their home of all water because they do not have much to begin with in such a limited space. Pretty much any type or kind of bonsai wants well-draining soil that isn't wet to the touch but has tons (or as much as possible) of moisture available especially when its soil begins to dry out in between waterings. What? That's like ordering GIANT shrimp. An oxymoron at best. You can't have moisture available soil and extremely great drainage conditions existing in the same planter!?! Aha. YES, you can! After years of my own failed bonsai attempts and seasons not lived through and changed conditions turning that tiny bonsai planter of already limited resources into a dungeon of doom or a casket of can nots, I finally figured out how to present my bonsai with the equivalent of an insurance plan that defies the oxymoronic existence it simply MUST have to live. I created a situation using my proprietary soil blended growing medium that every bonsai can now live and thrive in a planter that can still be underwatered, but most importantly cannot be overwatered. Ponder that for a moment..................So I am telling you that YES you can still underwater your bonsai, but you can give it an abundance of water as to error on the side of too much water however I have removed the condition where overwatering presents any problem for them. Yup I did it finally! With my personally crafted concrete planters and my carefully proportioned soil blended growing medium with no less than 7 ingredients my planters drain super effectively yet the medium is capable of locking in an abundance of moisture efficiently whereas it makes it available to the bonsai in an on-demand fashion. It’s not just water sitting around pooled up for when the plant needs it most. It is locked away in its planter's contents only to be released in a measured manner when the need arises. Well drained soil that holds a lot of moisture. Like a ton. Seems impossible on the surface, but I assure you it's not. That assurance affords me the ability to ensure you and ensure your bonsai will lead a long successful and prosperous life. In fact, the hope is one that extends into the generations you so care about, mostly yet unrealized nevertheless, upon the horizon we work so hard to cultivate. May the branches of your family tree grow long and strong while tending to a Superior Bonsai Tree healthy enough to get passed along. Superior Bonsai. Real. Live. Art.
